Beetroot Dosa

As the name suggests, beetroot dosa is made by grinding beetroot along with your favourite spices and mixing it with regular, normal dosa batter. Not only about the color, these are the excellent ways to make dosa healthy!!

Beetroot dosa tastes so good and the flavor from the spices added will definitely make you eat two more:-) This idea to make beetroot dosa was passed to me from my sister and after tasting the dosa, my husband gave me many other dosa variety ideas.

I followed my pesarattu dosa recipe for the spices to be added , to develop this recipe. You can follow the same or you can modify the spices to your wish. This is the best way to make the entire family eat a healthy dish.

Though the dosa itself is very tasty, any chutney can be used as a side dish. Coconut chutney along with beetroot dosa is the best combination.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup= 200 ml.

  • Dosa batter- 3 and a half cups
  • Beetroot- 1, large
  • Cumin seeds- 3/4th tsp
  • Ginger- 1 inch
  • Red chilli- 2
  • Asafoedita powder- 1/4th tsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1/4th tsp
  • Urad dal- 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig ( chopped to small)
  • Coriander leaves- little.

PROCEDURE

Clean the beetroot well, peel the skin and chop it into small pieces.
Move the chopped beetroot, ginger, cumin seeds, red chillies, asafoedita powder, coriander leaves to a mixer jar. Grind it to smooth without adding water. Remember that the dosa batter will have the needed salt. So we are not adding any salt.
Grinded to smooth.
Add the grinded beetroot paste to the dosa batter.
Mix it well. Look at the color🤩
In a small pan, heat 1 tbsp of oil. Add mustard seeds. Once mustard seeds splutter, add urad dal and curry leaves.
Add the seasoning to the dosa, beetroot batter.
Mix it and the dosa batter is ready.
Heat and spread 1 tbsp oil in a dosa pan and sprinkle some water on top. Wait for it to evaporate. This sets the uniform temperature for spreading dosa batter. Keep the flame in low. Spread the dosa batter now in circular motion and sprinkle some oil on top and around the edges. Repeat it when making dosa everytime.
Cover it with a lid and cook for some seconds till the top surface of dosa gets cooked.
Once it is cooked one side, flip it to the other side. Let it get cooked the other side too. It will take few seconds.
Repeat the process to make remaining dosa. Ready.

TIPS

  • Seasoning the batter is optional.
  • Using sesame oil gives good taste to dosas.
