Simple, Pressure cooker Thakkali Sadham ( Tomato Rice)

Thakkali sadham or Tomato rice is a simple, delicious South Indian rice recipe which is made using lots of tomatoes. I have shown the way of cooking it in pressure cooker.

This recipe is very easy to make and I have used very less masalas so you can get the taste from tomatoes. It can also be made with precooked rice. Precooked rice can be added to the tomato gravy prepared and served.

I have used 4 green chillies, red chilli powder with coriander powder mix, fennel seeds, asafoedita powder, turmeric powder in this recipe. In case you want to reduce green chillies, you can. Otherwise there is not much masalas used and it is made in homestyle. I haven’t made it in pulao style😊

Thakkali sadham is normally made with ponni rice in my hometown. If you want to use basmati rice, you can. Using basmati rice gives a good flavor but will give briyani-style. This goes well with boiled egg along with any variety of raita by the side.

Let us check the recipe of this easy-to-make, quick and delicious thakkali sadham or tomato rice which is perfect for busy mornings, for lunch or lunch box❤

INGREDIENTS

1 cup= 200 ml.

  • Tomato- 3 big
  • Onion- 1 medium ( slit thin lengthwise)
  • Rice- 1 and a half cup
  • Green chilli- 4 ( slit lengthwise)
  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder with coriander powder mix- 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4th tsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Split urad dal- 3/4th tsp
  • Chana dal- 1 tsp
  • Fennel seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Asafoedita powder- 1/4th tsp
  • Salt- as needed
  • Coriander leaves- little.

PROCEDURE

Clean the rice well and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
Chop the tomatoes and keep it ready.
Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pressure cooker. You can also add little ghee to it if you want. Add mustard seeds. Once mustard seeds splutter, add urad dal and chana dal. Let chana dal turn golden.
Then add fennel seeds and green chillies.
Add slit onions. Saute it.
Add curry leaves now and wait for onions to turn translucent.
Once the onions turn translucent, add ginger garlic paste. Let the raw smell of ginger garlic paste go away.
Once the raw smell goes away, add asafoedita powder. Add the tomatoes now. I missed clicking the picture of adding tomatoes. Sorry about this.
Once the tomatoes turn soft, add red chilli powder with coriander powder mix, turmeric powder and needed salt. Saute it.
Saute well till the tomatoes turns soft and oil separates on top.
Add 2 and a half cups of water and bring it to boil. Remember we have soaked the rice in water for 30 minutes. Check if the salt and the other spice is enough.
Drain the water and add the rice now.
Once the water boils again, close the pressure cooker and keep the flame in medium and cook till you get one whistle. Then move it from flame immediately and let the pressure release itself.
Once opening the pressure cooker.
Garnish with coriander leaves.

TIPS
