Tapioca Idiyappam ( Maravallikizhangu Idiyappam)

Tapioca is a starch extracted from cassava root. It is usually sold as flour or flakes. It is called as ‘Maravallikizhangu’ in tamil.

It is used to substitute flour in cooking or baking for people on grain-free, gluten-free diet. It’s naturally gluten-free.

Tapiocas are natural source of resistant starch. It becomes resistant to digestion and functions like fiber in our digestive system.

It helps to improve bone health, keep blood pressure under control and prevents birth defects. It also enriches red blood cells and helps in healthy weight gain.

Tapioca flour can be used in place of wheat flour, rice flour, corn flour, maida in cooking and baking. It is very tasty when cooked.

This tapioca ( maravallikizhangu) Idiyappam is very delicious and my kids had it happily!!

INGREDIENTS

  • Grated tapioca- 1 bowl
  • Grated coconut- 1 cup ( as needed)
  • Sugar – as needed ( jaggery can be used)
  • Cardamom powder- as needed.

PROCEDURE

Peel the skin and cut it into small tubes.
Take the tubes required and grate it with a hand grater or in a food processor.
Place it in a idli stand and keep some grated coconut, cardamom and the needed sugar on each idli stand holes on top of the grated tapioca separate.
Keep it in a idli cooker or in a pressure cooker( if in pressure cooker, no whistle on top) with some water down the vessel. Cook it for 15 to 20 minutes in medium flame.
Once opening the pressure cooker.
Ready to serve.

TIPS

  • Tapioca can be cooked separate without coconut and sugar too. Any kind of stew or paaya can be used as a side dish.
